We return to Strings for another double-header following the very successful 2018 Urban Nomads / Alleycats double-header.

Having learned from last time, there will be more seats available at Strings this time, particularly for the earlier of the two gigs, but there will also be a dancefloor area (particularly for the Alleycats gig).

First on stage from 7:30 - 9:30 pm is the 2019 Parliamentary Jazz Awards winner, Zoe Gilby (vocals). On a very rare trip "down south", Zoe and her musicians are based in the North East and tour internationally and throughout the UK, performing her original compositions, written with double bassist husband Andy Champion. Alongside the UK’s most innovative musicians, Zoe was selected for the prestigious artist development scheme Take Five edition, curated by leading London music producers Serious. Zoe is a creative, compelling songwriter and performer, establishing critical acclaim with her adventurous approach and influences from jazz and contemporary composers from Kate Bush to Thelonious Monk. It is clear to the Jazz Weekend organisers that she is a charismatic personality who is continuing her increasing popularity amongst audiences, press and promoters. We have been promised an exciting mixture of original material mixed with arrangements of standards. Zoe is joined by Harry Keeble (sax) Mark Williams (guitar), Andy Champion (double bass) and Abbie Finn (drums).

After a quick backstage rehearsal we will welcome back the Alleycats (led by Sax Appeal regular, and local hero Gary Plumley on saxes and flute) with very special guest Derek Nash on all saxophones. Derek will be warmed up after his earlier quartet gig, and a combination of Gary and Derek always results in a powerful selection of jazz/funk, latin and jazz fusion. A one-set gig to finish off Saturday, this will be full of energy and fun. The current planned lineup is Jim Thorn (electric piano), Jon Thorne (bass) Ken Black (drums), Jose Lito (percussion) but there might well be some other guest appearances.

Hopefully a great night and excellent value to see a wide range of top music, in a comfortable and relaxed former nightclub now one of the Island's best loved specialist music venues.
